Rockets Trade Deadline Grades From Around The Interwebs

We haven't seen much of Pablo Prigioni and K.J. McDaniels in Rockets red yet -- who knows if they'll play more after more practice time -- but we do know what the experts from the NBA Internet think of the deals:

Rockets acquire K.J. McDaniels from the Philadelphia 76ers for Isaiah Canaan and a 2nd Round Pick (via Denver).

Brett Pollakoff - Pro Basketball Talk: B+

McDaniels is a ridiculous defender as well as an athlete, yet Philadelphia gave him away to try their luck again at the NBA roulette table. That’s a nice pickup for the Rockets, and the same could be said for Prigioni, who could provide veteran minutes as a backup point guard for the stretch run of the season. The Knicks netted two second-round picks for the 37-year-old Prigioni, which is a coup in and of itself.

James Herbert - Eye on Basketball: A-

Canaan is an explosive backup point guard, but he's not in McDaniels' league in terms of ceiling. The high-flying forward has work to do to make his outside shot consistent, but has already shown how much of an impact he can make on defense. While the rookie out of Clemson is known mostly for his ridiculous dunks and blocks, he projects as a solid 3-and-D wing who can also protect the rim. That's rare, that's valuable, and that's worth spending money on this summer.

Jeremy Woo - Sports Illustrated: B+

The 6-foot-6 guard possesses freakish athleticism and a unique skill set, leading all qualified guards with an average of 1.3 blocks per game. He also averaged 9.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 25.4 minutes for the retooling (and possibly tanking) Sixers.

Kelly Dwyer - Yahoo! Ball Don't Lie: A

McDaniels has tremendous talent, and it was clear from the outset that he was not long for the 76ers after his representatives and the team couldn’t come to an agreement on the typically-goofy second-round contracts the Sixers give their players. Canaan is a fantastic shooter, but McDaniels has far more upside as a defender this season and something even more impactful should he remain with the Rockets.

Andrew Sharp - Grantland: Winner

Additional winner: K.J. McDaniels, who goes from a hopeless team deliberately going backward to a potential title contender. Third winner: Mark Bartelstein, the agent who saw the Sixers’ bullshit contract gimmicks and decided to play the reverse Uno card on Hinkie. Four partially guaranteed years? How ’bout one year!

Rockets get Pablo Prigioni from Knicks in exchange for Alexey Shved, a 2017 2nd Round Pick and a 2019 2nd Round pick.

Kevin Pelton - ESPN Insider: C

Because this is behind a pay wall I can't put some quotes from Mr. Pelton.

Pelton was the only guy to really touch on the Prigioni trade.  Compared to the rest of the trades of the day it was probably the least sexy of any of the deals.  Neither was the McDaniels deal really, but I think this was the best get for the Rockets overall, especially if they can sign him to a longer term deal, with Jabari Parker out for the season it's pretty easy to say that McDaniels has been the 2nd best rookie this season.
