Rockets acquire Lou Williams from Lakers

The Rockets have made their first move of the trade season, acquiring sharpshooter Lou Williams from the Lakers in exchange for Corey Brewer and a first-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical.

Williams, 30, was enjoying a career season with the Lakers, who have had quite a momentous day, hiring Magic Johnson as president of basketball operations and Rob Pelinka as their new general manager. Williams is averaging a career-high 18.6 points per game and 38.6 percent from the three-point line.

Williams was Eric Gordon’s biggest competition for Sixth Man of the Year, and he goes from a city where he was a veteran mentor for a team going nowhere fast to an organization that wants to contend now. This is a sign that the Rockets are looking to improve this year and are not waiting for the Warriors to take this conference. Houston is going to put up a fight, and Daryl Morey is doing his part to put this team in the best chance to win.

Houston’s surrendering of the defensive-minded Brewer for the offensive-minded Williams also shows they were still looking to find shooters to complete their sharp offensive attack. Another sniper in this regiment certainly can’t be a bad thing, and Williams makes this bench even deeper than it was before today.

With a little less than 48 hours before the deadline and a small forward spot opening with the departure of Corey Brewer, this move may not be Houston’s last. But for now, welcome to Houston, Lou Williams!
