The Houston Rockets are hoping to get past their rebuilding by getting two big-name free agents, Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet, and a new head coach, Ime Udoka. Then, changes to the list will stay. Who could be moving during the next season?

Three years ago, the Houston Rockets traded James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. It was the end of a very successful time when some of the best basketball the world has ever seen was played, but the team never won a title.

One of the biggest what-ifs of this age will always be Chris Paul's hamstring injury during the 2018 Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors, but both the injury and Harden's poisonous exit did occur.

That has led us to our current position. Since the Harden deal, the Rockets have vowed to rebuild rather than return to the postseason. Under head coach Stephen Silas, they heaped on young talent before making a dramatic turnabout this summer.

Silas was replaced by Ime Udoka, the former head coach of the Boston Celtics, who was fired after leading his team to the 2022 NBA Finals because of personal issues.

In addition to Udoka, the Rockets are pleased to welcome rookies Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore as well as free agents Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Jock Landale, and Jeff Green. They want to win again, but even with their off-season additions, it's easier said than done given how stacked the Western Conference is.

As they continue to try to bolster their roster, the Rockets should be a team that is active in trades this season. These three players are the ones they might trade for in the 2023–2024 NBA season. Jae'sean Tate's future in Houston seems doubtful at 27 years old, with a cheap contract, and battling with some of the team's finest young players on the depth chart.

To be honest, Jae'sean Tate might be dealt before the season begins, and if he is acquired, it would be as a salary dump rather than as a move to thin the roster. Tate is not particularly exceptional and is not needed by the Rockets.

As he is 27 years old, his chances of making significant progress are almost gone. During the previous season, he shot 48/28/73 for an average of slightly over 9 points per game. For the next two seasons, he only owes slightly over $13 million, with the next season being a team option.

Considering everything, Tate's chances of staying on the Rockets' roster are lower than his likelihood of being traded before the end of the following year. On the depth chart, he is probably behind Tari Eason, Kevin Porter Jr., Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, Dillon Brooks, and Cam Whitmore.

Since the Rockets no longer have room for Tate, a trade should allow him to benefit a different team and strengthen their wing rotation as Houston does not require Tate's assistance.

#1. Tari Eason

Tari Eason would mainly be a victim of a roster crunch, but this move would not be an indictment of his abilities.

Tari was chosen by the Houston Rockets as the 17th overall choice in the NBA Draft of the previous summer. Moving a rookie this early in his NBA career would surprise most clubs, especially considering that Eason had a lot of good moments during his rookie campaign.

But like the players listed before him, Eason might not have enough playing time available to him on this squad. He's up against players who have already been listed out, which is regrettably a frequent issue rebuilding clubs encounter.

Getting a ton of draft picks is nice, but ultimately those picks become players, and players need minutes, and minutes have an expiration date. Eason might be squeezed out and transferred to a team that would be content to give a young, talented two-way wing some playing time.

The sad thing is that the Rockets would probably be seeking more selections in exchange, or a young player at a different position that would suit a need for them. Perhaps a younger point guard or backup center to help stabilize their depth.

Eason is a talented athlete. He isn't on this list because the Rockets want to get better and because there are questions about his talent and potential. Rather, it's just because he's probably going to be cut due to roster construction. You can be sure he'll flourish somewhere if he's relocated.
